Selling digital products in Russia: connecting payments, refunds and customer access

A customer pays for a month of access but still cannot use the product. Another cancels renewal and immediately loses days they have already paid for. These problems often occur between the payment record and the product’s access system. For founders selling SaaS, AI tools, game items or digital content in Russia, each transaction needs to connect to the right account, product and entitlement change.

Start with what the customer buys and whether they will be charged again

Define the product before designing the payment integration. A one-time purchase of 30 days’ access and an automatically renewing monthly membership can provide similar access, but they have different billing rules. The one-time purchase ends after its stated term unless the customer buys again. Automatic renewal requires clear billing disclosures, valid authorization and subscription support actually approved for the Store and payment method.

When selling to Russia, support for a local one-time payment does not establish support for recurring charges. Keep the currency, first charge, renewal schedule, cancellation process and access period consistent across the Russian-language purchase page and Checkout.

  • Memberships: explain when access starts and ends, including access during a paid period after renewal is canceled.
  • Credits: explain the quantity, permitted uses, expiry and refund treatment. Credits in this guide mean product usage allowances, not cash balances that can be withdrawn or freely transferred.
  • Annual plans: distinguish charging once for the year from granting benefits monthly. A monthly grant is not another monthly charge.

Connect a confirmed payment to the correct product account

Suppose account A buys 100 credits. Before creating the purchase, save the account, selected plan and purchase reference in your system, then connect that record to the payment order using the supported reference fields. Do not guess the account from the payer’s email or grant credits merely because the browser reaches a success page. The customer may close the page, and the notification may arrive after the redirect.

Your server should verify the payment notification’s signature, check the order, amount, currency, product and Test or Live environment, and match it to the original purchase. Once payment is confirmed, grant the 100 credits exactly once and record the outcome. Use the same principle when activating a membership.

  • Payment confirmation: record the paid order. Query its status first when confirmation is missing or contradictory.
  • Entitlement delivery: record which product account received which benefit, including its quantity or access period.
  • Customer visibility: show the result and an order reference, with a useful status message and support route if delivery is delayed.

Handle renewal, cancellation and payment expiry separately

After a successful renewal, extend access or grant the allowance for that paid period. If renewal fails, do not grant a new paid entitlement. Any grace period or suspension should follow the rules disclosed at purchase; do not automatically erase access that remains valid from an earlier payment.

Cancellation at the end of a period normally stops the next renewal while preserving access through the paid period under the applicable terms. Apply the corresponding access change when the actual end or relevant confirmed status arrives. A cancellation request, an effective cancellation and a completed refund are separate facts.

An expired payment session usually means that a purchase was not completed before the payment page expired. It does not mean an existing membership has ended and should not remove benefits from earlier purchases.

Adjust memberships or credits after a successful refund

Link the refund to its original order and confirm success before adjusting benefits under the disclosed product rules and applicable consumer-protection requirements. A pending or failed refund should not be treated as a completed refund. A refund also should not be treated as confirmation that future recurring charges have stopped; subscription cancellation needs its own action and confirmed result.

Partial refunds need an explicit rule. They may cover unused time, a specific add-on or a price adjustment, so they do not always mean removing credits in proportion to the refunded amount. If 40 of the original 100 credits have been used, distinguish the original grant, usage and remaining balance without removing credits bought in another order. Keep an audit record and use manual review where the correct adjustment cannot be determined automatically.

  • Deduplicate by the refund’s unique identifier and link it to the original order.
  • Track the original amount, this successful refund and cumulative successful refunds separately.
  • Preserve the original payment and benefit records. Record subsequent adjustments rather than overwriting the history.

Repeated or out-of-order notifications must not duplicate benefits

Network timeouts can cause a notification to be delivered again, and different events can arrive out of order. Your system needs to check both whether it has handled the event and whether it has already applied the benefit change for the order, billing period or refund. Another notification is not a reason to grant another set of credits.

Persist the event reliably, then acknowledge and process it according to the integration contract. An HTTP 200 response confirms receipt, not delivery of the customer’s benefits. If a refund arrives before a delayed payment notification, reconcile the complete order state and processing history so the later notification does not restore benefits incorrectly. Investigate missing or inconsistent records instead of blindly charging or granting again.

Test the customer’s workflow, not just the connection

Start with a test account in your own product and follow the path from plan selection through purchase creation, trusted notification, benefit delivery and the customer-visible result. Test integration covers only the scenarios currently provided. Agree how to verify unsupported events instead of describing a local simulation or a successful response as complete end-to-end acceptance.

Record the environment, related order and event, and the entitlement-processing outcome. Keep Test data separate from real sales. Whether and when to validate a real payment should follow the approved scope; do not introduce mandatory real charges as a redundant launch requirement for every merchant.

  • One-time purchases: benefits still arrive after the success page is closed, and repeated notifications do not grant twice.
  • Subscriptions: verify the distinct rules for initial payment, renewal, failed renewal, scheduled cancellation and actual end.
  • Refunds: verify successful, failed, partial and out-of-order cases without incorrect access changes.

What NineLogix supports and what the merchant owns

For approved business, NineLogix connects Stores, products and prices, Checkout or API integration, and transaction operations. Signed notifications, order queries and exception investigation are provided within the supported scope. First establish the sales path, payment methods and subscription capabilities, then agree on the events and safe integration information needed.

The merchant owns product accounts, plan and entitlement rules, actual benefit delivery and the customer experience. A confirmed payment supplied by NineLogix should have a corresponding processing record in the merchant’s system. Payment, delivery, settlement availability and completed merchant payout are separate outcomes.

Local acquiring in Russia does not replace review of product rights, the merchant entity, transaction direction, banks and applicable sanctions or export controls. An application or successful Test does not approve every market, product or payment method for launch.

Frequently asked questions

Does selling 30 days of access require automatic renewal?

No. It can be a one-time purchase of a fixed term or a recurring subscription using an approved method. State which model applies on the product and purchase pages.

What if the buyer closes the page after paying?

Delivery should depend on a payment status verified by your server, not on the buyer staying on a success page. Link the order to the product account and reliably process the notification or verified order status.

Should cancellation immediately remove membership and credits?

Not in every case. Cancellation at period end normally stops the next renewal while preserving the paid term under the applicable terms. Refunds, immediate cancellation and dispute-related restrictions need their own verified facts and rules.

Does a webhook returning HTTP 200 prove integration success?

It confirms receipt of the request. Also verify account mapping, order linkage, actual entitlement changes, and correct handling of duplicate and out-of-order events.
